Title: Business as UNusual: Net Impact Student Guide to Graduate Programs 2009
Organization: Net Impact
Project Intern: Mark Freeman
Summary: During Summer 2009, I worked at Net Impact, a nonprofit organization in San Francisco which aims to inspire and educate individuals to help bring about social and environmental change. It has over 240 chapters in graduate schools in the U.S. and abroad.
One of Net Impact's main publications is Business as UNusual, a guidebook written by its student members. The guide is especially helpful for prospective students who are interested in a
business school that will train the next generation of responsible leaders. My internship involved editing, reviewing, and compiling this year's guide. I also wrote the introduction, a new addition to the guide. It's roughly 300 pages, and is the product of many hours sitting in front of InDesign.
You can download the guide for free at
www.netimpact.org/bizschoolguideFor seniors this guide is an invaluable tool if you're interested in an MBA program. Features include:
The student perspectiveWith 87 schools, Business as UNusual is the largest guidebook to date. It includes profiles submitted by Net Impact graduate chapter leaders, so you get how students perceive their curriculum, student activities, and career services program. Many profiles include elective classes that have social and environmental themes. Many business programs are working to add ethics classes to their management courses as well.
Detailed survey response dataEach school profile contains several "data bars" which allow you to see how students perceive their faculty enthusiasm, leadership preparedness, helpfulness of alumni networks, and more.
Cross-section of new leadershipSince each profile was submitted by Net Impact student chapter leaders, you can get a sense of how the next generation of business leaders is thinking differently from their predecessors. You can read about these trends in the guide's introduction.
